The Postcode Gardener Discovery work (From Friends of the Earth)

Purpose of discovery work: to inform the next Postcode Gardener projects

We are currently identifying potential new locations and partners for future Postcode Gardener projects and have identified Notting Dale as a priority location due to the high levels of green space deprivation, air pollution and over-heating risk. We also think there is energy and potential here to make the Postcode Gardener scheme work, and good alignment with the Council’s green plan.

We know that creating meaningful community solutions begins with gaining a deep understanding of people’s needs, wants, dreams and barriers. We want future Postcode Gardener projects to be rooted in the community, working to achieve what people want to see happen around urban greening and done in a way that more people can get involved.

What is the work?

To produce a short report or presentation, based on deep engagement with the community, to understand how a postcode gardener could best serve the needs and aspirations of your community. The report should also include a community development plan for a potential future Postcode Gardener in Notting Dale to deliver on.

The key questions and issues the work should address are below..

How will we understand people’s experience and views of urban greening

  • What do people think are the key issues that an urban greening project could help address in the community? E.g., Air pollution, improving soil, community resilience, wellbeing and social connection, increasing biodiversity etc
  • What do people think of urban greening they’ve seen? How does it make them feel? What’s
  • worked, what hasn’t and why?
  • What experiences have people had with volunteering with an urban greening project? How
  • could it be improved?
  • What experience and knowledge do people have that they could offer an urban greening project?
  • Who else should we be working / partnering with?

Accessibility and inclusivity

  • How can we make it easier for people to get involved in community greening?
  • When should Postcode Gardener sessions take place to support access?
  • What should Postcode Gardener sessions involve?
  • What might different types of Postcode Gardener sessions look like for different audiences?

Barriers

  • What might be some of the challenges a project like this could face in the community?
  • What would stop you / people in the community from getting involved?
  • How might we address some of these barriers?
  • What could help the community unlock barriers to urban greening? E.g. community access to growing infrastructure

The Postcode Gardener

  • What attributes would you like to see in your local Postcode Gardener?
  • What might an ideal Postcode Gardener look/be like?
  • How might we find a Postcode Gardener who is representative of the community?

Types of urban greening

  • What types of spaces do you think need greening? E.g., Street parking spaces, front gardens, communal spaces, school entrances etc
  • What specific areas in Notting Dale do people think a Postcode Gardener should focus on?
  • Pitch your dream project that you’d like the community to work with the Postcode Gardener on
  • What plants do people want to see in urban spaces e.g., what types/balance of edibles or ornamentals?
  • What should the balance be between new greening projects and maintaining existing projects

Financial sustainability of the Postcode Gardener

  • What might fee-paying urban greening services look like in your area that could help fund the free community greening e.g. Postcode Gardener offering greening service to local businesses or residents with profits funding free community greening.
  • What other ways do people think we could fund a Postcode Gardener beyond the initial start-up funding.
